EPL 2020-21, Matchday 32 review: Manchester United only team among top clubs to secure win
The English Premier League 2020-21 got done with its commitments of Matchday 32. Manchester City still leads in the race to win the title, while defending champion Liverpool struggles for a top-four finish. The European Super League controversy marred the week.
The Matchday 32 of the 2020-21 English Premier League has come to an end. It was an eventful week, mainly headlined by the controversy surrounding the dubious announcement of the European Super League. Nonetheless, the clubs involved in their respective EPL commitments did their part as we review the matchday performance of the top clubs.
Arsenal held by Fulham
There seemed to be no respite for ninth-placed Arsenal, as its bid for a European spot continues to be in tatters. Playing at home against a relegation-threatened Fulham, the Gunners managed to secure a 1-1 draw. Least to say, Mikel Arteta's men have a task at hand even for the seventh spot, for the UEFA Europea Conference League. At the same time, it continues to focus on the UEFA Europa League for a guaranteed UEFA Champions League spot next season.
Leeds United does well to hold off Liverpool
Liverpool's bid for a top-four finish took another setback after it was held 1-1 by tenth-placed Leeds. The host cut out Sadio Mane's 31st-minute opening goal. With The Reds currently placed sixth, it needs to up its ante in the coming games, besides hoping for the four teams above them to underperform.
Chelsea held by 10-man Brighton and Hove Albion
In one of the shocking games of the competition this week, fourth-placed Chelsea failed to fire even one past 16th-placed Brighton at Stamford Bridge. Although Brighton was reduced to ten men in the 92nd minute, the Seagulls did the job. Meanwhile, The Blues now has a task at hand to maintain its momentum in the top-four race.
Everton shares the honour with Tottenham Hotspur
In the big game of the matchday, Everton took on Tottenham at Goodison Park on Friday evening. As both rightfully settled for a 2-2 draw to share the honours, it was an intense clash. While the Toffees stays at eighth, Spurs is placed a spot above, on seventh, with both eyeing a European spot.
Manchester United comfortably dominates Burnley
In the only game involving the top sides that produced a result, second-placed United dominated 17th-placed Burnley at Old Trafford. It was a 3-1 win, as the Red Devils commanded the game in the closing stages, firing in a couple of goals, despite playing out most of the game levelled on 1-1, with Mason Greenwood scoring a brace.
