Carabao Cup 2020-21 final: Manchester City edges past Tottenham Hotspur to win record 8th title
This was Manchester City's record eighth title win of the Carabao Cup, besides winning it for the fourth consecutive occasion. City is also on the road to win the English Premier League title this season, besides eyeing a treble to win the UEFA Champions League.
English football giant Manchester City scripted history by winning the 2020-21 Carabao Cup (EFL Cup or League Cup). It beat Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 at the Wimbley Stadium in London on Sunday.
It was City's record eighth title win, a feat it now shares with Liverpool. Furthermore, it was its fourth consecutive title win, once again sharing the same with The Reds.
The match
Overall, it was an intense clash right from the start, with both playing with an attacking approach in the opening half, as the deadlock stayed in place, with City's defence being applauded. Meanwhile, the intensity continued in the second half, while Aymeric Laporte's 82nd-minute sole strike sealed the deal for the Cityzens.
Crucial stats
As for the stats from the game:
- Ryan Mason of Spurs became the youngest manager in the Carabao Cup final (29 years) to surpass Gianluca Vialli (33 years).
- Mason also became the first manager to lead a side in a major final in just his second game after Syd Owen, who managed Luton Town in the 1959 FA Cup final in his first match.
- Laporte is only the third Frenchman to score in the competition final after Louis Saha (2006) and Samir Nasri (2014).
- Pep Guardiola is the first manager to win four successive Carabao Cup titles and jointly holds the record of having won the most, along with Brian Clough, Alex Ferguson and José Mourinho.
- According to Opta, "Harry Kane didn't attempt a shot or create a single chance for Spurs in the Carabao Cup final, the first time he's done neither while playing more than 45 minutes in a game since September 2018, versus Inter Milan in the UEFA Champions League."
Reaction
"It's good. I was in big clubs: Barcelona, Bayern Munich, here. That's why it's easier to do. It's not full [Wimbley], but it was a great noise [from the fans]. Today, we are incredibly happy that we have four in a row in this competition. We tried to win the game, created a lot of chances. They had some chances on the counter, but in general, we had a good game," told Guardiola after the game to Sky Sports.
