IPL 2021: Records galore as Ravindra Jadeja's all-round performance helps CSK beat RCB by 69 runs
This was Chennai Super Kings' fourth win of the Indian Premier League 2021, as along with a loss, it has risen to the top spot. Meanwhile, Royal Challengers Bangalore suffered its maiden defeat of the season, while with four wins, it drops to second.
It was a brutal and exquisite performance from former champion Chennai Super Kings that outsmarted Royal Challengers Bangalore by 69 runs in Match 19 of the Indian Premier League 2021 at the Wankhede Stadium, in Mumbai, on Sunday. All-rounder Ravindra Jadeja contributed in both departments to be the outright star of the match, as RCB suffered its first loss of the season. Jadeja smashes records all around
Jadeja smashed 36 runs in the final over off pacer Harshal Patel, besides claiming 3/13. As a result:
- He has now scored the joint-most runs in an over of IPL, with the other being Chris Gayle, off Parameswaran (2011).
- He is the third batsman to hit five sixes in an over of the tournament after Gayle and Rahul Tewatia.
- He is now the joint-most wicket-taker against RCB in the IPL (23), along with Ashish Nehra, Sandeep Sharma and Harbhajan Singh.
- He is the first CSK player (10th overall) to score 50-plus and claim a three-for in the same IPL game, while this was also the 13th instance of the same.
- He is the first Indian (second overall) to score a half-century, hit five sixes, claim three wickets and bowl a maiden in a T20 game. The other was David Willey, against Northamptonshire (2018).
Harshal scripts lows
Harshal was hammered for 37 runs in the final over. Consequently:
- He has now bowled the joint-most expensive over of the IPL, after Parameswaran in 2011.
- He has also bowled the most expensive 20th over of the competition, going past the previous expensive of 30 by three bowlers.
- It was his most costly spell (3/51) of IPL 2021, after 3/47 against Rajasthan Royals.
RCB produces a high despite defeat
RCB was off to a flying start, scoring 65/2 in the powerplay. As a result, it was the joint-highest powerplay total of IPL 2021, alongside Delhi Capitals' 65/0 against CSK.
Match summary
Winning the toss, CSK skipper MS Dhoni elected to bat. Although it was a steady start by Faf du Plessis, Jadeja's cameo in the final over allowed CSK to set a mammoth target of 191/4. In reply, RCB was off to a flying start during the powerplay, but Jadeja struck back with the ball as well, derailing RCB's chase, while lack of partnerships forced it to succumb to a 69-run loss.
