Coronavirus lockdown: Harbhajan Singh, Geeta Basra pledge to donate ration to 5,000 families
Amid the 21-day nationwide lockdown enforced by PM Modi with an aim to curb the spread of the coronavirus pandemic, cricketers and leading sportspersons are coming out to the forefront to play their part as role models.
Sportpersons have been spreading the message of social distancing and staying at home to citizens so that they can prevent the spread of COVID-19 virus.
India's veteran off spinner Harbhajan Singh who has been at the front, championing the cause of the PM's Janatha Curfew, has been quite active on social media in spreading awareness to fellow citizens on safety tips to be taken to prevent being infected by the virus.
Harbhajan took to Twitter to announce that he and his wife Geeta Basra have pledged to distribute ration to at least 5,000 families in Jalandhar, Punjab where there are many underprivileged struggling to feed themselves.
"By the blessings of the almighty, Geeta and I pledge to distribute ration to 5,000 families residing in Jalandhar who are struggling to feed their families during this difficult time. We will continue to help and support our fellow citizens in whichever (way) we can to lessen the burden of struggle. Stay safe stay in and stay positive may God bless us all," Harbhajan shared a message on Twitter.
Several Indian sports personalities have come forward to make generous donations in the time of crisis as the country battles the pandemic.
While the BCCI has donated Rs 51 crore to the Prime Minister's Relief Fund, the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina and PV Sindhu among others have also made personal contributions to government's relief funds.
BCCI president and former Indian cricket team captain Sourav Ganguly has also donated to West Bengal CM's relief fund. He also donated to ISKCON Kolkata to feed 10,000 people daily.
