Kalaburagi: An 8-year-old girl was allegedly raped and murdered in Yakapur village in Chincholi Taluk of Kalaburagi district on Monday.  The victim was a class two student.

The girl who attended school regularly had remained absent on Monday.  Villagers had seen the girl wandering with a man named Yallappa of the same village in the afternoon.

Her parents became frantic after she did not return home after school. They started searching for the girl across the village, when they heard that she was with Yallappa. When he was asked, Yallappa tried to evade their questions and said that he was not aware of the girl.

Suspecting something foul, her parents informed Sulepet Police and the villagers handed over Yallappa to authorities.

When the villagers searched for the girl with the help of torches at night, they spotted a body in the canal of Mullamari irrigation project located behind the Anganwadi centre in the village.

The innerwear of the accused had been recovered from the spot where marks of bleeding were also spotted.

Police sources said they suspect that the girl had been murdered after being raped.

Police are interrogating Yallappa and further details are awaited.
