Indian head coach Ravi Shastri has done a decent job with Team India since his appointment in 2017. While he was re-appointed in 2019, India failed to win the ICC World Cup under him.

However, it seems like the 2021 ICC World T20 would be his last as the head coach, as he has refused another extension until the South Africa tour later this year. As a result, he would be stepping down from the role post WT20, reports InsideSport.

Currently, there is no clarity on who will replace him, while the Board of Control for Cricket in India is likely to invite applications. Although Rahul Dravid, who had been heading the National Cricket Academy until now, was deemed favourite for the role, he has reportedly re-applied for the NCA job, making him a doubtful candidate.

The report also adds that the BCCI would not renew the contracts of the assistant coaches, despite having performed well. Vikram Rathour (batting coach), Bharat Arun (bowling coach) and R Sridhar (fielding coach) are likely to quit before the home series against New Zealand. Also, Rathour has been under fire following a string of poor batting shows by Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane, and Cheteshwar Pujara.

Nonetheless, while BCCI decides to finalise a new coach, it could be possible that Dravid heads Team India during the Protea tour. Also, there is an unlikely need for a batting coach if Dravid shows interest in the role. However, the BCCI would look to finalise the new head coach before the tour of SA, while Shastri and co are to quit before the home series against NZ.
