On Thursday, India is off to a shaky start in the fourth Test against England of the Pataudi Trophy 2021 at The Oval in London. Meanwhile, India's team selection and the continuous omission of veteran all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin has raised eyebrows.

During the toss, India was put to bat first. Meanwhile, Indian skipper Virat Kohli revealed that although there were a couple of changes, they did not include Ashwin. He further added that it was all about getting partnerships. While he lauded the opening stands so far, he was critical of getting more out of the middle-order, besides asserting that the side would not back down on energy and effort to perform in the remainder of the series.

Following the same, former English skipper Michael Vaughan was left baffled by Ashwin's non-selection and called the entire episode "madness". "The non-selection of @ashwinravi99 has to be greatest NON-selection we have ever witnessed across 4 Tests in the UK !!! 413 Test wickets & 5 Test 100s !!!! #ENGvIND Madness …" he tweeted.

Earlier, on Wednesday, India's bowling coach said that Ashwin selection depends on the pitch The Oval presents on Thursday. While he feels that it is unfortunate for the veteran to have not played so far, he would definitely play if there is an opportunity and if he fits in the team tactics.

Arun had also warned that while the Oval track assists spinners, the English are aware of Ashwin's abilities and could exploit him if he does not get adequate assistance from the wicket. As for the track, it has a good grass cover, but experts suggested that spin could play a part later in the innings, while scoring runs in the latter stage gets easier.
