India produced a terrific bowling performance to win by 38 runs in the opening Twenty20 International against Sri Lanka at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Sunday. After Suryakumar Yadav (50) and Shikhar Dhawan (44) propelled India to 164/5, seamer Bhuvneshwar Kumar finished with 4/22 to help India have the first laugh.

Winning the toss and electing to bowl, Lanka struck in the opening ball after pacer Dushmantha Chameera got rid of Prithvi Shaw, caught behind by Minod Bhanuka. Nevertheless, the opening joy did not last long for the host, as the visitor piled up 51 within the powerplay.

Meanwhile, the first ball of the non-powerplay phase saw wicketkeeper-batsman Sanju Samson getting trapped leg-before to spinner Wanindu Hasaranga for 27. However, it was followed by a 62-run stand between Yadav and Dhawan.

Dhawan looked to accelerate and depart for 46 to pacer Chamika Karunaratne in the 15th over as it started to drizzle mildly. While Yadav brought up his second T20I half-century in the process, he too looked to accelerate but could not get going, falling for the score to Hasaranga in the following over, as the score read 127/4.

In came wicketkeeper-batsman Ishan Kishan and, along with all-rounder Hardik Pandya, contributed to a 26-run stand for the fifth wicket before the latter fell for ten to Chameera in the 19th over after being caught behind. Kishan and all-rounder Krunal Pandya contributed 11 more, as India finished on 164/5, while the batsmen struggled to connect the ball properly, with the pitch seemingly getting slower.

As for Lanka, six bowlers were utilised, with Chameera and Hasaranga making the most impact. However, skipper Dasun Shanaka was the most economical of all.

In reply, Lanka was off to a shaky start, losing Bhanuka for just ten to spinner Krunal in the third over, with 23 runs on the board. Nonetheless, the pair of Avishka Fernando and Dhananjaya de Silva contributed 25 more and saw out the powerplay before the latter was cleaned up for nine by leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal in the seventh over.

Just a couple of runs later, Fernando departed for 26 to Bhuvneshwar in the following over. However, the pair of Charith Asalanka and Ashen Bandara contributed 30 for the fourth wicket before, at 90, a slower delivery from pacer Pandya bowled the latter up in the 13th over.

A 21-run stand followed for the fifth wicket between Asalanka and Shanaka. However, Chahar prompted the former to go big and was caught by Shaw in the deep, falling for 44 in the 16th.

Hasaranga, too, followed for an unfortunate duck in the same over after being knocked over at the same score. Following his dismissal, the tail-enders could barely do anything and fell in single digits, as it became an easy job for the Indians later to win the clash by 38 runs.

For India, six bowlers were utilised, with Bhuvneshwar being the most effective with a four-for. While every bowler contributed, Chahal turned out to be the most economical.
Brief scores: India 164/5 (Yadav- 50, Dhawan- 46; Chameera- 2/24) defeats Sri Lanka 126 in 18.3 overs (Asalanka- 44; Bhuvneshwar- 4/22) by 38 runs.
