1983 World Cup hero of India, Yashpal Sharma passes away at 66 following cardiac arrest

In what comes as sad news for Indian cricket, veteran Indian cricketer Yashpal Sharma passed away following a cardiac arrest on Tuesday in Noida. He was 66 and was one of the heroes of India's 1983 World Cup-winning campaign.

"Yes, Yashpal is no more with us. We just received the information from his family," one of Yashpal's former Indian teammates confirmed the same to PTI. He is survived by his wife, a son and a couple of daughters.

Yashpal was prominently effective in the longest format, having scored 1,606 runs in 37 matches at an average of 33.5. However, he contributed his part in the One-day Internationals as well, scoring 883 in 42 games at 28.5, besides possessing a strike rate of 63.0.

While Yashpal was famous for being robust, his explosive half-century during the semis against England at Old Trafford in Manchester happened to be his most memorable knock. He also scored an exquisite 89 against the Windies in the tournament's opening game. Overall, he scored 240 runs at 34.28 to finish as the second-highest run-scorer for the side during the competition, after Kapil Dev.

He also played 160 First-Class matches, amassing over 8,900 runs, playing for Punjab, Haryana and Railways. Besides, he served as the national selector during the initial part of 2000.
