Amid a shortage of oxygen in hospitals across the country, the Centre has decided to go ahead with a massive infrastructure upgrade and set up 551 dedicated pressure swing Adsorption medical oxygen generation plants in public health facilities.

The funds for setting up the 551 medical oxygen generation plants will be drawn from the PM Cares Fund.

Earlier this year, Rs 201.58 crore had been allocated for installing 162 dedicated PSA medical oxygen generation plants at public health facilities.

The decision is aimed at further strengthening the public health system. This would also ensure that each of these hospitals has a captive oxygen generation facility.

The plants will be established in identified government hospitals in district headquarters in various states and union territories.

A PMO statement said, "The system will ensure that government hospitals in the districts do not face sudden disruption of oxygen supplies and have access to adequate uninterrupted oxygen supply to manage the Covid-19 patients and other patients needing such support".

The decision comes on the day the country logged a record rise of 3,49,691 new infections and 2,767 fatalities.
