PM Modi reviews IAF's Covid-19 relief efforts

During the review meeting, the air chief informed that the IAF has ordered 24x7 readiness of the entire heavy-lift fleet and substantial number of the medium-lift fleet to operate in a hub and spoke model to rapidly meet all Covid related tasking across the country and overseas.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday asked the Indian Air Force Chief, Air Chief Marshal RKS Bhadauria to increase the speed, scale and safety of operations in transporting oxygen tankers and other essential medical materials. 

Air Chief Marshal Bhadauria called on the prime minister, wherein he informed the latter about the IAF's Covid relief efforts. 

During the review meeting, the air chief informed that the IAF has ordered 24x7 readiness of the entire heavy-lift fleet and a substantial number of the medium-lift fleet to operate in a hub and spoke model to rapidly meet all Covid related tasking across the country and overseas. 

"Aircrew for all fleets have been augmented to ensure round-the-clock operations," an official statement said.

As per the statement, "PM Modi spoke about the need to ensure that the IAF personnel engaged in Covid-related operations remain safe from infection. He also spoke about the need to ensure the safety of all Covid related operations."

The air chief also told the Prime Minister about a dedicated Covid Air Support Cell set up by the IAF to ensure faster coordination with different ministries and agencies to Covid related operations and the hospitals under IAF have increased covid facilities, where civilians are also being allowed.

IAF's covid relief effort

On April 22, the IAF transport aircraft airlifted Covid testing set up load to Leh from Jammu airbase. On the same day, two C-17 aircraft airlifted Linde cryogenic oxygen containers and one IL-76 carried one empty Inox container to Panagarh in West Bengal. 

On April 23, eight empty cryogenic oxygen containers were airlifted from Begumpet to Bhubaneswar and one from Indore to Jamnagar. On the same day, IAF's Rapid Action Medical Team personnel and equipment were carried from Jorhat in Assam to Hindon airbase in Uttar Pradesh.

On April 24, the IAF's C-17  brought oxygen containers from Singapore and offloaded at Panagarh airbase. Another C-17 aircraft brought two empty container tricks for liquid oxygen from Pune to Jamnagar. Two empty cryogenic oxygen containers were transported from Jodhpur to Jamnagar. 

On April 25, two tankers were airlifted from Gwalior to Ranchi, three containers from Jodhpur to Udaipur, three containers from Indore to Jamnagar. 

On April 26, the IAF transport aircraft airlifted six empty cryogenic oxygen containers from Dubai and positioned them at Panagarh for refuelling. Within the country, two containers were transported to Jamnagar from Jaipur. 

On April 27, the C-17s airlifted 6 cryogenic oxygen containers from Dubai and three oxygen containers from Singapore to Panagarh airbase. In addition, IAF C-17s also airlifted 2 cryogenic oxygen containers from Indore to Jamnagar, 2 from Jodhpur and Udaipur to Jamnagar, 2 from Hindan to Ranchi, 8 from Hyderabad to Bhubaneswar, 2 from Bhopal to Ranchi and 2 from Chandigarh to Ranchi.

On April 28, the transport aircraft airlifted three oxygen tankers from Bangkok to Jamnagar, one oxygen tanker from Agra to Ranchi, one from Chandigarh to Ranchi, two oxygen tankers from Indore to Raipur and Bhopal to Surat. It is airlifting one oxygen tanker from Hindon to Ranchi and another tanker from Bhopal to Ranchi. Two tankers are being airlifted from Jodhpur to Jamnagar while four from Indore to Jamnagar and Gwalior to Ranchi.

Moreover, 23 mobile oxygen generation plants will be airlifted from Germany to be deployed in AFMS hospitals. These oxygen-generating plants are expected to reach within a week. Eight plants from France will be transported to India.
