Health ministry data said 36,71,242 people were vaccinated in a day, taking the total number of doses administered to 6,87,89,138.

The vaccination surge comes a day after the Centre's decision to keep both public and private sector Covid Vaccination Centres operational on all days in April.

The decision, which was taken after detailed consultations with the States and Union Territories, is aimed at rapidly increase the pace and coverage of the Covid vaccination.

From April 1, the vaccination drive was expanded to cover all people above 45 years of age.

The Union Health Ministry has sought to dispel doubts among people with regard to vaccines.

Dr NK Arora, chairman of the Operations Research Group of the National Covid Task Force, explained the need for extended intervals between the two doses of the Covishield vaccine.
