The Maharashtra government has announced new restrictions in Pune in view of the rising number of coronavirus cases in the city.

The new government directives include restrictions on the movement of people from 11 pm to 6 am for non-essential activities.

All education institutions and private coaching classes will remain closed till February 28.

Hotels and restaurants in the city will have to shut their establishments by 11 pm every day.

The decisions were taken during a meeting chaired by Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and Pune's Guardian Minister Ajit Pawar.

Essential services like milk and vegetable supply and hospital emergencies have been excluded from the restrictions.

The imposition of restrictions was necessitated after the city reported 998 new Covid-19 cases and nine deaths. The Covid-19 tally in the division stood at 5,14,319 and the death toll at 11,698.
