The Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has set an ambitious target of expanding Bengaluru's Namma Metro network to 220 km within the next five years. This expansion plan includes opening six new routes spanning 143 km for commercial operations.

At present, the Namma Metro covers a total operational distance of 77 km, including the Whitefield-Challaghatta Purple Line corridor of 43.49 km and the Madavara-Silk Institute corridor of 33.5 km. Additionally, the recently approved Phase 3 Hebbal-Sarjapur corridor, measuring 36.585 km, was greenlit during the cabinet meeting on December 6. The state government has clarified that all proposed routes, except the Red Line, will be opened to the public as per the plan.

Blue and pink lines to be operational by 2026

The Yellow Line, which connects Electronic City, is expected to commence operations by March or April 2025. BMRCL has also assured that the Phase 2 Blue Line (58.19 km) and Pink Line (21.26 km) will become operational by the end of 2026. The civil work for both these lines is progressing steadily, with significant milestones achieved.

Approximately 45% of the civil work for the Blue Line Phase 2A and 2B, connecting Central Silk Board to Krishnarajapura and onward to the airport, has been completed by December 2024. Furthermore, 10% of the track has been laid from the Outer Ring Road to the airport.

On the Pink Line, 13 km of tunnelling work has been completed between Kalena Agrahara and Nagawara. Around 22.16% of tunnelling is finished from Tavarekere to Nagawara, while 79% of the elevated track to Kalena Agrahara is now in place.

The Orange Line, costing ₹15,611 crore, is anticipated to be completed within five years. This line comprises two corridors: JP Nagar Phase 4 to Kempapura and Hosahalli to Kadabagere. As part of the project, 1,29,743 square meters of land have been identified for acquisition for Corridor-1 construction, while 26,811 square meters will be acquired between JP Nagar Phase 4 and Mysore Road Metro Station. Meanwhile, geotechnical investigations are underway on Magadi Road.

The BMRCL projects a daily ridership of 2.5 lakh passengers on the Yellow Line. The Pink Line, which passes through the city centre, is expected to serve 5 lakh commuters daily. Meanwhile, the Blue Line can accommodate up to 7.7 lakh passengers daily, and the Orange Line is projected to cater to 7.28 lakh daily users.
