The pious occasion of Navratri is incomplete without the special dawn programme on Mahalaya by All India Radio or Akashvani radio blessing the ears of the netizens. Mahalaya will be observed on October 6, and it had special importance in West Bengal. Mahalaya marks the last day of PitruPaksha, and it is also believed to be the day Goddess Durga arrives on her trip to earth. For Bengalis, welcoming the pious feet of goddess Durga on account of Mahalaya has been a significant ritual for 90 years. Many devotees of the Bengali household wake up at 4 am and welcome the Goddess Mahishasuramardanini composition on the radio. It was initially composed in 1931; the 90-minute musical presentation was performed live on radio for many years, but later it was shifted to the pre-recorded format. The soulful recitation narrates the creation of Goddess Durga to save the gods from Mahishasura, the buffalo demon. Renowned composer of the yore, Pankaj Kumar Mallick, had composed the tune. Many top artists of the earlier time had given their musical voices to the devotional songs, accompanied by a Chandipath narrated by the legendary Birendra Krishna Bhadra.
This year the All India Radio or Akashvani Radio will again hold the programme. The one-and-half-a-hour programme will begin at 4 am on October 6, 2021, and devotees can hear on Indraprasth, FM Gold, and AIR Live, News 24*7 YouTube Channel. The programme can also be seen at Zee Bangla. The Zee show airs at 5 am, while the DD Bangla will telecast a particular programme, titled 'Durgatinashini Durga', at 5.30 am on October 6.
