'Let women decide...' Sadhguru on anti-Hijab protests by Iranian women

Sadhguru's remarks come at a time when Iran's capital Tehran has been witnessing protests over the custodial death of Amini for allegedly violating the hijab laws. Video shared on social media showed women, in an act of defiance, cutting their hair and burning their hijabs on the streets. Tehran has cracked down upon the protesters using batons and tear gas shells.

Amid the ongoing global condemnation and protests regarding the custodial death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in Iran over allegedly violating the Islamic country's conservative dress code for the Hijab, spiritual leader Sadhguru has called for freedom for women to decide how they want to dress.

Taking to Twitter, Sadhguru said: "Neither the religious nor the lecherous should determine how women should dress. Let women decide how they want to be attired. May this retributive culture of punishing someone for what they wear be put to an end, religious or otherwise."

On Wednesday, the Kurdistan Human Rights Network -- a rights group registered in Norway -- claimed that seven protestors, including a 16-year-old girl, were killed by the Iran police.

This is not the first time the Isha Foundation founder has voiced his views about the Hijab.

Earlier this year, during the peak of the Hijab controversy in Karnataka, Sadhguru was quoted as saying to a television news channel that children should not be subjected to the previous generation's prejudices. Sadhguru was also quoted in another media outlet as saying that there are certain aspects that are misrepresented. In India, one can dress the way they want -- nobody will question them, he said, adding, however, in a school, it is the institution that decides what you have to wear.
