In a major development, Italy has recognised India's Covishield Covid-19 vaccine. The latest EU member to recognise WHO-approved Covishield, after several others like Germany, Switzerland, France and Spain has taken the numbers of EU countries to 19.

Indian vaccine card holders are now eligible for GreenPass, the Indian embassy in Rome tweeted Friday.

The Embassy of India Rome (Italy) on Friday said that Italy has recognised Serum Institute's Covishield.

Italy has become the latest EU member to recognise WHO-approved Covishield, after several others like Germany, Switzerland, France and Spain. Indian vaccine card holders are now eligible for GreenPass, The Indian embassy in Rome tweeted Friday.

According to the Indian Embassy, this development comes after the G-20 Health Ministers' meeting between India's Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya and his Italian counterpart Roberto Speranza.

“As an outcome of G20 health ministers’ meeting between (health ministers of India and Italy) coupled with Indian foreign ministry persistent efforts, Italy’s health ministry recognises India's Covishield. Indian vaccine CardHolders are now eligible for GreenPass,” the Indian embassy tweeted.

A green pass proves the holder has been fully vaccinated or recovered from Covid, granting them access to indoor restaurants, bars, cafes and other indoor venues.

So far, Italy had only recognised these Covid-19 vaccines--Comirnaty – Pfizer; Moderna; Vaxzervria – AstraZeneca, and Janssen – Johnson & Johnson for travel. Now, a total of 19 countries have recognised Covishield vaccine, which include Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Finland, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Latvia, Netherlands, Romania, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland.

The AstraZeneca vaccine Covishield produced in India, is the most widely recognised vaccine for travel in the EU after those approved by EMA.

Meanwhile, the United Kingdom on Wednesday revised its travel advisory and accepted Serum Institute of India (SII) manufactured Covishield as an 'approved vaccine' after facing severe backlash over its latest international travel advisory.
