1936: Hitler oversees Berlin Olympics opening ceremony
With more than 5,000 atheletes from 51 countries march into a stadium packed with 100,000 guests, Adolf Hitler made his only public statement of the Berlin Olympics at its opening ceremony on this day in 1936. He had said: “I proclaim the Games of Berlin, celebrating the eleventh Olympiad of the modern era, to be open." 
Post Hitler's remarks, Germna composer Richard Strauss' 'Olympics Hymn' was performed. n 1936, the torch has been carried as a part of a relay for the first time. 

1996: George RR Martin's 'Game of Throne' debuts
On this day, the epic fantasy novel by George RR Martin was released. The book was the first in Martin’s “A Song of Ice and Fire” series. It is, about feuding medieval families on an imaginary continent called Westeros. 
Although not initially a best-seller, “A Game of Thrones” gained a loyal following, and the “Song of Ice and Fire” series eventually became a huge hit, selling millions of books and spawning a blockbuster HBO series. 
The books are known for their plots and huge casts and the HBO series ran from 2011 to 2019.


1996: Michael Johnson brings home second gold
Sprinter Michael Johnson broke the world record in 200 metres to win gold at the Atlanta's Summer Olympics. Before his record, he had also won the 400 metres, making him the first man in history to win both events at the Olympics.
On the same night, Marie-Jose Perec of France became the second woman to accomplish the feat and American Valerie Brisco-Hooks had won both races at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles.
