At least three individuals were killed Saturday afternoon when an Amtrak train travelling between Seattle and Chicago crashed in north-central Montana, according to a Liberty County Sheriff's Office spokesman.

According to dispatcher Starr Tyler, three persons were killed in the incident. According to a statement issued by Amtrak, there were many injuries. Amtrak spokesman Jason Abrams said that the Empire Builder train derailed at 4 p.m. in Joplin, a hamlet of roughly 200 people. The accident site is approximately 150 miles (241 kilometres) north of Helena and around 30 miles (48 kilometres) from the Canadian border.

According to Abrams, the train carried around 146 passengers and 16 staff members. According to him, the train comprised of two engines and ten carriages, with seven of those vehicles derailing. According to Abrams, Amtrak was collaborating with local authorities to remove wounded passengers while securely evacuating all other passengers.

According to spokesperson Eric Weiss, the National Transportation Safety Board will send a 14-member team to examine the incident, which will include investigators and specialists in railroad signalling and other disciplines.

Five Amtrak cars derailed about 3:55 p.m. Mountain Daylight Time, with no other trains or equipment involved. He stated that the train was moving on a BNSF Railroad main track at the time. According to the video uploaded on social media, people can be seen waiting by the tracks, baggage scattered next to them, and many railway carriages can be seen leaning off the rails, with at least one toppling onto its side.
