Hugo Barra steps down at Xiaomi will return to Silicon Valley

Hugo Barra, who has been pretty much the face of Xiaomi in India and around the world has stepped down as the Vice President, International. In a Facebook post, he has written how the 'singular environment' has taken a toll on his life and his plans to return back home to the Silicon Valley.

"What I've realised is that the last few years of living in such a singular environment have taken a huge toll on my life and started affecting my health. My friends, what I consider to be my home, and my life are back in Silicon Valley, which is also much closer to my family. Seeing how much I've left behind these past few years, it is clear to me that the time has come to return," he wrote.

Barra has been instrumental at making Xiaomi a global brand. Barra's exit is believed to come at a time when Xiaomi is trying to restrategize by pulling out of markets like Singapore and Brazil, and also opening several offline stores.

Over the years, he has become a popular face at Xiaomi press events in India. With a friendly and enthusiastic demeanour, like always, Barra made his final appearance for Xiaomi at the recent launch of the Redmi Note 4 in New Delhi.

Talking about the journey so far, Barra wrote, "When Lei Jun and Bin Lin came to me nearly four years ago with the opportunity to help turn a young rockstar startup into a global player, I embarked on what has been the greatest and most challenging adventure of my life. I moved to Beijing, 6,500 miles out of my comfort zone in Silicon Valley, to build from scratch a startup team within a bigger startup. I can proudly say that Xiaomi Global is the first baby I helped bring into the world."

"To my Xiaomi colleagues in China and India: as I leave our home in Beijing and Bangalore, please be assured that I will remain your loyal and grateful Mi fan," he adds.

Xiaomi has been dabbling with several product categories and despite its rough patches, continues to be one of the most sought after brand in India. In fact, many believe the company has helped shed off the stereotypical image that comes with Chinese products. Xiaomi India recently announced to have crossed $1 billion in revenue.

Barra has said he will officially step down after Chinese New Year, which means he will be around until 2 February. Xiang Wang, Xiaomi’s Senior Vice President will lead the global expansion efforts here on.
