The last player to take a Test hat-trick was Stuart Broad in 2014 against the Lankans when he dismissed Kumar Sangakkara, Dinesh Chandimal and Shaminda Eranga at Leeds.

Adam Voges, Peter Nevill and Mitchell Starc Herath's victims in the 25th over on Friday. While Starc and Nevill went for a duck, Voges was dismissed for a poor score of eight.

Voges was the first of the three to depart. Voges lobbed a catch to extra-cover as he tried to drive Herath.

Nevill gifted his wicket to the opposition when he was nowhere close to playing the delivery and was hit right on the pads. The umpire was more than sure that the ball hit off and middle stump.

It was Starc who next came to the crease and did not last the hat-trick ball. He was hit on the pad. Although there seemed to be no inside edge, the height gave him an advantage as the umpire did not raise his finger. The Sri Lankans reviewed the umpire's call, and Hawkeye showed the ball hitting the top of the middle stump.

After bowling out Sri Lanka for 281 in the first innings, Australia had a disastrous time when they walked in to bat. Thanks to Herath's 4 for 35 and Perera's 4 for 29, the World No. 1 side were bowled out for an embarrassing 106 giving the hosts a lead of 175 runs.
