While uncertainty continues to surround the upcoming Olympic Games in Tokyo, the organisers have been hit with a controversial setback. Games president, Yoshiro Mori has decided that he would step down from the role after he reportedly made some sexist remarks.

According to a Japanese media report, sources of NHK have confirmed that Mori would resign after he made some sexist remarks at women. It was reported on February 3 when Mori said that the meetings involving women take too much time to conclude.

Although Mori later apologised for the same, it had already drawn widespread criticism. On Thursday evening, he informed the concerned parties that he would be stepping down, as he also shouldered the blame for his remarks.

As of now, it is unclear as to who would take charge following Mori's resignation. Furthermore, the Tokyo 2020 organising committee, along with Mori's office, has refrained from commenting anything on the matter. Meanwhile, CNN reports the committee would also hold an emergency meeting on Friday to discuss the fallout of Mori's remarks and resignation, besides taking a call on the further course of action.

Mori was playing a massive role in the efforts to ensure that the Games could be held in time in the Japanese capital. The committee needs to find a replacement for Mori soon, as the organisers struggle to get everything ready and in place before the event begins from July 23. Furthermore, experts have opined that if it won't be possible to hold the event this year, a total cancellation is imminent.
