Neeraj Chopra soars to second spot in world rankings following Tokyo Olympics gold

Neeraj Chopra made a magnificent effort to win the gold in the javelin throw at the Tokyo Olympics. Consequently, it has impacted the world rankings, as he has soared 14 places to second.

Indian javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra remains in the headlines following his gold rush at the Tokyo Olympics. He became India's first-ever track and field athlete to win Olympic gold, besides being only the second India to win an individual Olympic gold.

Meanwhile, his splendid performance his Tokyo has earned him a boost in the world rankings. As per the latest world rankings, he has soared up 14 placed to be placed second.

He is behind Germany's Johannes Vetter, who has a score of 1396, while the Indian possesses a score of 1,315. Neeraj threw a distance of 87.58 metres to win the gold, as it is termed as one of the ten magical moments in athletics of the Tokyo Olympics.

"Most keen followers of the sport had heard of Neeraj Chopra before the Olympic Games. But, after winning the javelin in Tokyo, and in the process, becoming India's first athletics gold medallist in Olympic history, Chopra's profile sky-rocketed," read a statement on the website of World Athletics.

Neeraj's performance at the Games has also earned him massive recognition on social media. While before the Olympics, he had followers of 1,43,000 on Instagram, it has sky-rocketed to 3.2 million, as he is now the world's most-followed track and field athlete.
