Indian cricket team has been right on top of their game ever since Anil Kumble took over the duties of the coach of Virat Kohli and co. India comfortably outclassed West Indies, South Africa, New Zealand, England and Bangladesh in the longest format of the game after that. Recently, India staged an incredible comeback in the ongoing Test series against Australia to draw level in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

The partnership between Captain Kohli and Jumbo, as he is popularly known as, has been working wonders for the team. The new Committee of Administrators (CoA) appointed by the Supreme Court has been changing things in Indian cricket and rumours have surfaced that Kumble might be given the role of the director of the team and Rahul Dravid might take over the role of the coach of the senior team.

This has nothing to do with the abilities of the two legends. Both Kumble and Dravid (who is currently the coach of the India A and U-19 team) have done exceedingly well for Indian cricket in their respective roles. But the momentum that the Indian cricket team has been in under the leadership of Kohli and able guidance of Kumble, might get hampered with a sudden change.

However, Diana Edulji, the former captain of the Indian women’s team and who is also a member of the CoA stated that the committee has not discussed anything of that sort. But the Board has not ruled out the possibility as they have been making structural changes for the betterment of Indian cricket.

“We need to move ahead with the times and that is why these structural changes are looked at. If it happens, Indian cricket will benefit, as one person will handle all the teams and there will be better coordination between all concerned. The plan is already in place and there is a strong possibility that when new contracts are given out, these changes will be made,” a BCCI source was quoted as saying by the New Indian Express.

It all depends on Kumble whether he would want to take up the job of the director of the Indian cricket team. However, it is unlikely that the CoA would want to take such a step when Indian cricket is in good shape and form.

"It is too early to say whether Kumble will take up the role or not. Being the coach and team director (with new responsibility) is no easy thing as it needs a lot of dedicated time. The amount of cricket we play might burn him out. If he doesn’t, we need the back-up as we can’t let the team getting affected, particularly with the Champions Trophy coming up," the source added.
