kerala rains air stops broadcast

The broadcast of All India Radio (AIR) Thiruvananthapuram came to a complete halt for the first time in history after a transmission tower at Kulathoor collapsed following heavy rain and powerful winds that battered the capital on Friday evening.

AIR service to Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam and Kanyakumari was disrupted when the 122-meter long tower with 20 kilowatts transmission power suffered damage. However, temporary service resumed through FM station.

Major damage due to strong winds and rain was reported from various parts of the city yesterday evening. The fire station here received over 100 phone emergency phone calls seeking help. Train service was also affected when a tree fell over Chennai- Egmore Express. Power was disrupted, and the city fell into complete darkness after electrical lines were damaged in the rain.
