12 year old boy is Keralas youngest father

Investigators have confirmed that a 12-year-old boy from Kerala is the youngest father in the country. The paternity of the baby was confirmed through genetic profiling of the girl child and the boy.

"It is not an unusual condition and such cases were reported in foreign countries. The boy could have attained puberty at a much earlier age. The medical condition is called precocious puberty. However, this is the first case that had come to our notice from the state," Dr P K Jabbar of Thiruvananthapuram Medical College said.

The 16-year-old gave birth to the baby girl a few months ago at a private hospital in Kochi. Investigators decided to conduct a test as it is the first incident that had come to notice.

A genetic profiling test was conducted by generating DNA profiles from the blood samples of the baby and father. The baby was only 18-days-old at the time of analysis. DNA profiles of both were compared to affirm paternity.

Usually, similarity in DNA is found in the case of identical twins. As the boy and the child are not identical twins, it was confirmed that he is the father of the child.

The incident had opened up a conundrum as the perpetrator and victim were minors. The police registered a case against the boy under the provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act.

The baby was handed over to Child Welfare Commission as the parents of the girl said they won't be able to take care of the child.
