Key US Market Drivers

A crucial earnings week awaits markets, where results from chipmakers including Nvidia and Marvell Technologies Inc. (MRVL) are expected later this week.

NVDA shares fell nearly 3% at close, extending to seven consecutive days of declines even as analysts expect sales for the quarter to jump 97.2% to $98.18 billion, marking the fastest pace of growth in a year. Nvidia is due to report quarterly earnings after the market close on Wednesday. Meanwhile, MRVL stock fell more than 3% ahead of its results.

Broader weakness in the semiconductor industry, driven by price-hike concerns, dragged down the VanEck Semiconductor ETF (SMH) and iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) indexes, which dropped about 2.5% each.

Stocks and bond markets will also be watching for Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh’s speech at the Fed’s annual Jackson Hole symposium on Friday. Investors will be looking for details on the Fed’s announced plan to stabilize long-term Treasury yields, as well as cues on its policy path.

Meanwhile, U.S. Treasury yields moved lower after reports that the Treasury could tap its nearly $1 trillion General Account to help fund an expanded government bond buyback program. Last week, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent indicated that buybacks could exceed the recently announced $4 billion minimum per operation, potentially providing additional support to longer-dated Treasuries and putting further downward pressure on yields.

The U.S. 30-year Treasury yield was trading at 5.242% at the time of writing, while the U.S. 10-year Treasury yield was trading at 4.716%.

Additionally, a slew of economic releases, including July’s PCE index, consumer confidence index, and the second estimate for the second-quarter (Q2) 2026 Gross Domestic Product (GDP), are expected this week.

“This week’s events combined with overbought conditions, seasonality and midterm elections are likely to accelerate equity market volatility,” Doug Beath, global equity strategist at Wells Fargo Investment Institute, reportedly told CNBC.

“We continue to believe that the backdrop for stocks remains positive: record corporate earnings driven by AI capital spending despite moderate consumer spending,” he added.
