Sea erosion causes houses to collapse in Ullal

Sea erosion causes houses to collapse in Ullal

The house of one Khayarunnisa, resident of Kaiko, is partially washed out in the lashing waves. She has moved the things in her house to a safe place with the help of locals.

From past two weeks gale winds are lashing the shores at Ullal and the local authorities had brought it to the notice of the district administrator and requested to put stones behind Khayarunnesa’s house. On Tuesday efforts were made to put stones but by afternoon the house collapsed even as she was watching.

Several houses of the poor in Kaiko Hilaria area are prone to sea erosion. The locals are of the opinion that a permanent preventive wall from Ullal to Talapadi will safeguard these houses.

Ullal Municipality President Hussain Kuimon, Mayor Vani Alva, officials of Revenue Department and others visited the spot and recommended shifting of people to safe places.

In another incident, heavy rains lashed several parts of the State on Tuesday.  A seven year old girl is reported washed away in the overflowing stream in Koppal. A man is reported dead due to lightning in Vijayapur. In the coastal regions of Dakshina Kannada and Uttara Kannada districts, heavy sea erosion is reported. In the Kaiko region of Ullal, near Mangalore, one house collapsed completely and another is partially damaged. More than 10 houses are in the danger of collapsing.
