Karnataka adopts Southern Bird Wing as the State butterfly

Karnataka gets State butterfly in Southern Bird Wing

After the state flag and state anthem, Karnataka gets a State butterfly. The Southern Bird Wing has been officially declared as the State butterfly as Governor has finally issued a notification in this regard. The butterfly is endemic to South India, found mostly in Karnataka and Western Ghats. In fact, Karnataka is the second state in the country after Maharashtra to adopt a State butterfly. Maharashtra state butterfly is Blue Mormon butterfly.

Earlier, the Karnataka State Wildflife Board had submitted a proposal to declare the Southern Bird Wing as the State's butterfly. Among the many butterflies listed for recognition, the Southern Bird Wing was chosen as its colours match with the colours of the Karnataka Flag - Yellow and Red, reports Kannada Prabha.

The scientific name of the Southern Bird Wing is Troides Minos and the International Union of Conservation of Nature has reportedly recommended that the numbers of these butterflies be monitored. The butterfly is the largest butterfly in India with females growing up to 190 mm in length. That's why it is called bird wing, reports Kannada Prabha.
