At a time when the gruesome incident of a pregnant Muslim woman being burnt alive for marrying a Hindu in Vijayapura is still fresh in the minds of people, yet another incident of murder over love has been reported - this time from Kolar, Karnataka. 17-year-old Rajeshwari is the latest victim of this disturbing trend. Rajeshwari, a Scheduled Tribe resident of Chinnapura village in Kolar district, was in love with Mohan, a Dalit man of the same village.

According to a report in the Kannada Prabha, Venkatamma was informed by a friend of Rajeshwari that the she had gone to meet Mohan. A heated argument broke out between mother and daughter when Rajeshwari returned home. In a fit of rage, Venkatamma took a log and hit Rajeshwari on her head. The daughter collapsed, bleeding, and died instantly.

Petrified, Venkatamma, along with her son and other daughter, tried to hush up the matter and decided to bury the body early in the morning. However, villagers who saw them grew suspicious and alerted the police. Venkatamma and her other two children have been arrested now.

Reportedly, Rajeshwari's affair with a Dalit had become the talking point in the whole village. Venkatamma, allegedly, was very upset with villagers taunting her and she had, on many occasions, tried to force her daughter to end the affair. According to a Times of India report, the mother was also upset that the daughter had failed her exams and stopped studying. The report stated that Venkatamma, a single mother, had raised her three children with difficulty and wished all of them to be well-educated and find high-paying jobs.

Early this week, a Muslim pregnant woman was burnt alive by her own family in Gundakanala village Vijayapura as they did not approve of her marriage with a Hindu man. The family members also assaulted and set Sayabanna Sharanappa Konnur on fire before stabbing Begum Banu.

But Sayabanna who has sustained severe injuries is now battling for his life at a hospital. The police have arrested Banu's mother and sisters while her brother and brother-in-laws are absconding.
