Stargazers and astronomers will have a field day today with the 'Super Blue Blood moon', a once in a lifetime phenomenon, taking place for the world to see.

So what exactly is happening?

Tonight, people will get to see a rare total lunar eclipse where the Earth’s shadow will move across the moon, blocking out the light from the sun. This will turn the moon into a red ball in the sky that will impress the children and send shivers down the spine of the religious.

A supermoon is when the full moon will be closest to the earth on its orbital journey, 360,198km away, which will make it look big and impressive. This point is known as the 'perigee'. The Moon will appear upto 14 percent larger and 30 percent brighter, according to NASA.

Now for those in India who want to witness this phenomenon (the last time this occurred was back in 1866!) can do so at these timings:

Bengaluru: Starting time - Wed, 31 Jan 2018, 6:15 pm, Ending - Wed, 31 Jan 2018, 9:38 pm
