Vellore: After the incident of Sathankulam Police allegedly killing a father-son duo in custody after they were detained, Vellore Police has adopted a damage control approach by announcing the 'no arrest after dusk' rule.

If at all a case demands an arrest during the night, the official will have to obtain special permission from the SP.

This comes as a breather to many in districts like Vellore, Tiruvannamalai, Tirupathur and Ranipet of Vellore Range.

This apart, police will have to strictly maintain a pocket diary to record their daily routine.

According to reports, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police, Vellore Range was quoted as saying, “The police personnel have been strictly told that the Constitution-guaranteed fundamental rights should not be infringed upon. They have been also told to treat the public with politeness, sympathy and respect."

The DIG has instructed the police officers that no arrest was needed in offences punishable with less than 7 years of imprisonment.

Concerned Superintendent of Police would monitor detention of any persons after dusk in their respective limits.

Giving station officers and cops below that rank a dressing down, the DIG has encouraged them to increase the conviction rate of criminals by putting their energy into evidence collection and case strengthening rather than resorting to illegal methods and physical abuse.
