FollowMalappuram: A 22-year-old man committed suicide on Tuesday (November 12) after he was allegedly thrashed by his girlfriend's relatives in Kottakkal, Malappuram.
According to police, Shahir was in a relationship with a 17-year-old girl. After the girl's family became aware about the relationship, the family met the man and warned him against meeting the girl. However, Shahir was allegedly brutally beaten up by the girl's father.
Reportedly, Shahir's brother, who came to his rescue, was also beaten up by the girl’s family. Shahir who consumed poison during the incident was rushed to hospital and died a day later, police said.
Shahir's family has alleged that the injuries caused by the attack and public humiliation were the reasons behind his suicide. A case has been registered against 15 people, including the girl's father.
Shahir was a daily wage worker. A month ago, the girl’s father had lodged a complaint at Kottakal Police Station alleging that Shahir has been disturbing his daughter. Police then summoned both families and instructed Shahir to end the relationship as the girl is still a minor. However, he carried on with the relationship which irked the girl’s family further.
