Karnataka Election 2023: Bangarappa brother, former ministers' sons in fray to stake claim

In Shivamogga district, the sons of former chief ministers, two sons of former MLAs and wife of the late former MLA are in the election fray. Besides, five sitting MLAs, including the Home Minister have also tested their luck.

In the wake of the Karnataka assembly elections, the politics of former chief ministers and sons of former ministers and legislators (the second generation) has started in Shivamogga district. Among these, three sons of former Chief Ministers are contesting in this district.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has once again fielded the sitting MLA Kumar Bangarappa from the Sorab constituency who won the 2018 Karnataka Assembly election. The Congress, on the other side, has fielded Madhu Bangarappa from the same constituency.

In 2013, Madhu Bangarappa was the JD(S) MLA elected from the Sorab constituency. He is the brother of sitting MLA Kumar Bangarappa. While the JD(S) has fielded Basuru Chandre Gowda from the seat.

During the 2018 Karnataka Assembly election, BJP's Kumar Bangarappa won the constituency by 72,091 votes and the voting rate was 46 percent. He won the election against Janata Dal (Secular) candidate S Madhu Bangarappa with a margin of 13,286 votes.

JD(S) candidate S Madhu Bangarappa was the runner-up in the contest with as many as 58,805 votes. Meanwhile, the Congress candidate Raju M Talluru received 21,721 votes.

Sharadamma Appaji, wife of former MLA late Appaji Gowda, is contesting from JDS in Bhadravati. In this Assembly constituency, Sharadamma hopes that her husband's charisma, who had a firm grip on politics for three decades, can help her politics as well.
