Ahead of Sonia Gandhi's scheduled virtual meeting with party leaders, the party received a setback after West Bengal state general secretary Rohan Mitra resigned from the post.

Mitra protested against the party's West Bengal president Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury for grooming sycophants and spoiling his (Adhir's) as well as party's prospects in the state.

In a strongly-worded letter, he hit out at Chowdhury by openly calling him 'incapable' as West Bengal Pradesh Committee president.

Mitra also highlighted Congress alliance with Islamic hardliner Abbas Siddiqui's ISF party at the behest of Chowdhury. The alliance he thinks damaged the party's image and offered BJP a chance to consolidate its position as an alternative Opposition at least.

Mitra reportedly claimed that he rarely sees Congress party's revival in West Bengal under such a circumstance in which misfits are encouraged to take the top spot.

This development comes at a time when Adhir was at the receiving end post the flop show in West Bengal elections and names of leaders like Shashi Tharoor, Manish Tiwari and others floated to replace Chowdhury as Congress Lok Sabha leader in Assembly.
