After taking charge at the state Congress headquarters, Sidhu was in form and said there was no difference between an ordinary worker of the party and its state unit chief.

Navjot Singh Sidhu formally took over as the captain of the Punjab Congress in Chandigarh on Friday in the presence of Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh.

After taking charge as the Punjab Congress president, Navjot Singh Sidhu said he is "thick-skinned" and assured he will work in collaboration with all the party members since "no party can be made without workers". He further said the Congress is united and that he cares about the well-being of Punjab.

"Today, the Congress is united. No party can be made without workers. I have got thick skin. I care about nothing more than the well-being of Punjab. I will only work for Punjab. This is not just an address, but it's my soul talking. Workers are the soul of the party,” Navjot Singh Sidhu said.

“I will work shoulder-to-shoulder with the Chief Minister. I have no ego…The Congress is united today, contrary to what our opposition is saying,” he said. However, in a subtle reference to the recent state of affairs before he was elected as the president, Sidhu added, “Those who oppose me help in my improvement, Sidhu added.”

Navjot Singh's elevation to the Punjab Congress chief post comes amid a tussle between him and Amarinder Singh. Tensions between the two top Congress leaders flared up in April this year after the Punjab and Haryana High Court quashed a probe into 2015 Kotkapura police firing incident. Navjot Sidhu had attacked the chief minister putting out tweets blaming Amarinder Singh for delay in ensuring justice in the 2015-sacrilege case and subsequent police firing incidents.

Earlier in the day, Amarinder Singh and Sidhu met at the Punjab Bhawan during a ‘tea party’. Their meeting, coming after months of confrontation between the two, likely marks the end of the political crisis in the state party unit.

After the truce in the Congress camp, Sidhu touched Capt Amarinder Singh’s feet and sought his blessings as the cricketer-turned-politician padded up for a challenging innings in his political career.
