Indian Army's Sikh Regiment on Saturday celebrated 175 years of its raising at the Sikh Regimental Centre in Jharkhand's Ramgarh Cantonment.

The Sikh Regiment is one of the most decorated regiments not just in the country but amongst the entire Commonwealth.

The Regiment's ceremonial celebrations commenced with the paying of homage to the martyrs at the Regiment's War Memorial followed by a seminar address by Sikh Regiment Colonel Lt Gen PGK Menon via video conference.

Besides, a 'SIKH' magazine was released along with the unveiling of the 175-year silver trophy.

On July 30, 1846, the Regiment's first battalion was raised as XIV Ferozepore Sikhs. The Regiment had been part of several battles in the pre-Independence era. The battalion saw action in both World War I and II.

The Battle of Saragarhi is still regarded as the bravest battle ever fought by the Regiment. In 1897, 21 soldiers from the 36th (Sikh) Regiment fought to the last man for more than six hours to defend a British outpost from 10,000 Afghan tribesmen.

The Regiment proved its mettle and scored major victories in every battle that the country has fought since Independence.

The Regiment has the honour of being the first battalion to arrive by air to Srinagar on the outbreak of hostilities on October 27, 1947, earning the sobriquet of 'Saviours of Valley'.
