Diversion alert: Priyanka Gandhi-Vadra to contest elections in UP?

Rahul Gandhi Priyanka Vadra Uttar Pradesh elections

Amid the rising chorus that Rahul Gandhi may be  elevated to the post of the Congress party chief, reports have now emerged that the high command wants Priyanka Gandhi Vadra to play a prominent role in the upcoming Uttar Pradesh elections.

A NewsX report said that the Congress Working Committee (CWC) wants Priyanka Gandhi Vadra to contest from Uttar Pradesh.

The reports of her elevation comes at a time, when Priyanka's businessman husband Robert Vadra is facing charges of owning 'benami' properties in London. The ruling BJP government has alleged that Vadra has a close tie-up with arms dealer Sanjay Bhandari.

According to a report in the DNA newspaper, the re-jig in the party organisation could be announced before June 7 ahead of Rahul Gandhi's plans to go abroad for a vacation. The report observed that his sister Priyanka, who is already involved in UP affairs, could be now handed more responsiblity.

"If Priyanka assumes official responsibility of UP, she will be effectively assimilated into the Congress fold. There has been a loud chorus for Priyanka Gandhi to lead the UP campaign," a senior Congress leader told DNA.

Earlier in the day, party spokesperson Sushmita Dev said: "We are a national party. There are certain procedures…When it comes to Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, we all wholeheartedly accept their leadership. We all want Rahul to take over as and when (it will happen), we will make a proper statement."
