Bhiwandi building collapse seven killed

 At least seven persons were killed and 15 others injured when a building collapsed in the powerloom town of Bhiwandi in Thane on Sunday morning amid heavy rains.              

 

A two storied building at Gaibi Nagar under Shanti Nagar police station limits in the town crashed at around 9.30 AM, Bhiwandi tehsildar Vaishali Lambate said.

           

Asianet News reports that seven persons lost lives in the tragedy and many are feared trapped under the debris of the old building. 

 

About 7-8 families were residing in the building. Firemen and policemen rushed to the site.  The injured were rushed to Thane Civil Hospital and a hospital in Bhiwandi. 

 

District Collector Dr Mahendra Kalyankar rushed to the site to supervise the relief and rescue operation. Heavy rains were affecting the rescue operation, officials said.  

 

Quoting officials, Asianet News reports that a warning had been issued against using the old building. But the residents refused to quit the building, the claimed.       

Thane witnessed heavy rains since Sunday morning and many low-lying areas were waterlogged. Thane Municipal Commissioner Sanjeev Jaiswal, after visiting the disaster control cell, issued a warning to residents of the city not to step out of their houses unless it was essential.
