La Liga 2020-21: Lionel Messi matches a special feat

Lionel Messi of Argentina in one of the greatest modern-day footballers, while he is often referred to as one of the Greatest of All-Times, alongside Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo. He has myriad records to his name, besides scripting another with each passing game.

Argentine football superstar, Lionel Messi is someone who barely needs any introduction. The Barcelona legend is considered one of the modern-day great and is also one of the Greatest of All-Times, alongside Cristiano Ronaldo of Portugal.

Messi has countless records to his name at both levels, mostly at the club level. As he continues to script more with each passing game, he has done so again.

On Saturday, during Barcelona's La Liga clash against Alaves, Messi scripted yet another record. While Barca won the match at Camp Nou, 5-1, Messi did score once.

However, the record is not precisely related to goal-scoring, but the number of matches he has played. It happened to be his 505th game for the Catalans in the competition, as he levelled the feat of his former Barca teammate, Xavi.

Messi has now played the joint-most number of games for Barca in the tournament. However, the record for most La Liga appearances is still quite far away, with Andoni Zubizarreta playing 622 matches.

Furthermore, Messi has now scored 459 goals in the tournament. Overall, it was his 759th appearance for the side, having scored 653 goals to date.

As far as Barca is concerned this season, it has relatively been an off performance. Although it is currently placed second in the table, with 46 points, it has played a game more than table-topper, Atletico Madrid, on 54 points.
