Battle for Back-to-Back Glory

Royal Challengers Bengaluru enter the final as the defending champions, aiming to retain the title they won for the first time last season. Only Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians have successfully defended the IPL trophy, in 2011 and 2020, respectively, and RCB now have the opportunity to join that elite group.

Alongside CSK and MI, Kolkata Knight Riders have also won the IPL three times, though they have never successfully defended a title. If RCB win again, they will become only the fourth franchise in IPL history to win multiple titles.

Additionally, Rajat Patidar, under whom the RCB clinched their maiden IPL triumph last year, has an opportunity to become the third captain after MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma to successfully defend an IPL title as captain.

High-Scoring Paradise

High-Scoring Paradise

The Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad has traditionally been a batter's paradise, characterised by a flat, true surface that offers consistent bounce, encouraging stroke play, and frequently leading to high-scoring encounters. In the IPL 2026, there have been only two instances of 200+ total at this venue: One between GT vs RR on April 4 and another between GT and CSK on May 21.

Since RCB and GT have a strong batting line-up, the title clash could witness both sides chasing down or setting massive totals, potentially pushing the par score well beyond the 200-run mark. In fact, Royal Challengers Bengaluru breached the 200-run mark five times, while Gujarat Titans crossed it thrice during their campaign.

The upcoming final between RCB and GT is expected to be an intense tactical battle, as both teams will look to leverage their formidable batting depth to dominate in the high-pressure environment of the Narendra Modi Stadium.

The Revenge Factor

In Qualifier 1, Royal Challengers Bengaluru delivered a clinical 92-run victory over the Gujarat Titans, posting a record-breaking 254/5 that left the Titans unable to respond, as they were eventually bundled out for 162. Since the two sides once again lock horns in the battle of supremacy in Ahmedabad, the Gujarat Titans are poised to seek redemption and clinch their second triumph.

Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium has been the home ground for the GT, where they won five out of seven home matches, including a four-wicket win over the RCB on April 30. Also, the venue is where RCB won their maiden IPL triumph last year, establishing a deep historical connection for both teams as they prepare for this high-stakes final.

GT will look to capitalise on their familiarity with the surface at the Narendra Modi Stadium, while RCB will aim to carry forward the winning momentum from their dominant Qualifier 1 performance to secure back-to-back championships.

 Dew Factor

Dew Factor

Though the clash between RCB and GT will be played at the Narendra Modi Stadium, the role of dew under the lights could prove to be a game-changer. As the match progresses into the second innings, the settling dew is expected to make the ball slippery, potentially complicating the task for the bowling side to maintain grip and control.

Out of the seven matches played at Ahmedabad this year, 4 were won by the team batting second, with all four won by the Gujarat Titans, illustrating their specific tactical strength when chasing under home conditions. RCB, on the other hand, won only two matches while chasing in Ahmedabad in IPL history.

Thereafter, the team that wins the toss is likely to opt for bowling, as the advantage of chasing under lights at Narendra Modi Stadium, mitigating the impact of the dew on the ball and leveraging the pitch's tendency to favour the side batting second, is simply too significant to overlook in a high-pressure final.

Rajat Patidar vs Shubman Gill’s Captaincy

The final showdown between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Gujarat Titans will serve as a tactical chess match between the two captains, Rajat Patidar and Shubman Gill. Patidar, who led Bengaluru to their maiden IPL triumph in his captaincy debut, has earned a reputation for his calm demeanour under pressure and his ability to maintain an aggressive, momentum-driven approach, even when defending large totals.

Gill, on the other hand, turned the GT’s campaign in the second half of the season, winning 6 out of seven outings, finishing second on the points table. Having successfully guided the team back to the final after a setback in Qualifier 1, Gill has shown that he is afraid to shuffle his bowling resources or promote aggressive batting options to counter specific match-ups.

As they square off for the fourth time in Ahmedabad, the result may hinge on which captain can manage the high-pressure dynamics of the venue, adapting to the dew factor, and make the most effective bowling changes when the game hangs in the balance.
