This Valentine's Day will be all the more special for this 25-year-old R Manigandan and 24-year-old Surega. This man-woman trans couple in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, was, for very long, striving hard to get their marriage registered.
For 25-year-old R Manigandan and 24-year-old Surega, this Valentine's day will be very special. The trans man-woman couple will be receiving their marriage certificate today.
Manigandan and Surega had been trying hard to get their marriage registered ever since they got married on February 14, 2018. Here, it was not the society that opposed the couple, but the law, which proved to be a hurdle when it came to registering their marriage.
With God's grace, the officials from the registration department in Coimbatore recently informed the duo that their marriage would be registered under the Tamil Nadu Registration of Marriages Act, 2009.
The inspector-general of registration, Chennai, had sent a notification to all district and sub-registrar offices on January 28 asking them to register marriages of transgenders.
The two can now say 'happily ever married' as their marriage will finally be registered. That apart, this is a shot in the arm for other transgender couples across the state, who were not able to register their marriage.
