Krunal Pandya detained at Mumbai airport: Here's why
Krunal Pandya represents Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League, with whom he recently won his third title. MI have won their record-extending fifth title of the tournament. Krunal has been playing for MI since 2016, along with his brother Hardik.
In what comes as a shock amidst rejoicing, Indian all-rounder, Krunal Pandya has been detained at the Mumbai airport by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI). He is reported to have been carrying undisclosed gold and other valuables.
Krunal, who plays for Mumbai Indians (MI) in the Indian Premier League (IPL), won the title on Tuesday. While it was the record-extending fifth title win for the side, Krunal won his third title, having been playing for the side since 2016.
The IPL was held in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) this season. It was due to the challenging situation in India, surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic. Consequently, the final of the tournament was held in Dubai.
Following the conclusion of the tournament, some Indian players have left for Australia, for the upcoming tour. Meanwhile, Krunal, who is not a part of the tour, has returned to India, along with other players.
As he landed in Mumbai around 5 PM on Thursday, he had to go through the regular customs duty at the airport. Consequently, after being suspected of carrying undisclosed gold and other valuables, he was stopped by the DRI personnel and detained.
As of now, no further information is available, as to what would happen next. Meanwhile, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is yet to respond on the matter.
