WWE referees rarely intervene in matches, but there have been times when they secretly helped wrestlers in unexpected situations. Here are three moments that caught fans by surprise.

WWE referees have rarely played a major part in wrestlers' storylines. Their job is limited to overseeing the rightful conduct of matches. However, often, referees have gone away from their traditional role and helped players when things went out of the storylines. We look at some top moments when WWE referees helped wrestlers from unusual situations.

#3 Drew MacIntyre vs Dolph Ziggler

In a 2020 RAW match between Drew MacIntyre and Dolph Ziggler, things went aggressive. Drew MacIntyre, while outside the ring, started throwing multiple chairs in the ring. Dolph Ziggler, on the other hand, was lying inside the ring after a proper beatdown. One of the chairs thrown by the Scottish wrestler came flying in the direction of Ziggler, and it was in the trajectory to hit his head. But the referee quickly noticed the chair and intervened, saving Dolph Ziggler from a major injury.

#2 Money in the Bank 22

Additional referees are placed near the ring during ladder matches. WWE ladders are designed to be lightweight for safety, but this can also make them unstable, especially in high-risk spots like the Money in the Bank match. In the MITB 22, when Rob Van Dam climbed the ladder to splash on a wrestler, referees were seen trying to hold tight to the ladders.

#1 Charlotte Flair vs Becky Lynch

In the Evolution PPV, Charlotte Flair and Becky Lynch faced each other in a last-woman standing match. During the match, referees helped wrestlers so as to continue the planned script. In one instance, Becky Lynch found herself trapped in Flair's submission hold.

A strategically placed steel chair was supposed to help her escape, but it was just out of reach until the referee subtly nudged it closer, allowing Becky to grab it and break free. The entire moment was caught on camera.
