IPL 2020 breaks viewership records, 28% spike compared to last year

The 13th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) has broken all its previous viewership records. As per Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) reports, the viewership hike is huge. This is the first-ever edition which is being held entirely behind closed doors.

The 13th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), which is being held in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) due to the novel coronavirus, is not just setting new cricketing records, but also surpassing its viewership records of the IPL history.

Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) India posted a tweet, pertaining to IPL viewership, which has amazed almost everybody. "The IPL was a blessing to all those who wanted something from the 'old normal'. The viewership of the IPL has increased from last season, as the data shows," said the tweet.

As per the data recorded by BARC, it shows that IPL 13 registered seven billion viewing minutes for the first 41 matches aired across 21 channels, which is 28 per cent higher as compared to IPL 12 at the same stage. IPL 12 had got 5.5 billion viewing minutes for 44 matches aired across 24 channels.

A direct hand to hand comparison showed that performance per match of IPL 13 is higher than the last season. IPL 13 saw a viewership of 108 million for 41 matches, which are 11 per cent higher than IPL 12. The previous season had registered 98 million viewership.

The playoffs of the IPL season are scheduled to start next week. The final will take place in Dubai on November 10.
