Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) India has opened bookings for its upcoming sports utility vehicle Jeep Compass.

The vehicle, which is being locally manufactured at the company's joint-venture facility in Ranjangaon (near Pune), could be pre-booked at Rs 50,000, FCA India said in a statement.

Jeep, last year, brought in the Wrangler and the Grand Cherokee to the Indian market. In fact, The Compass is the new entrant in the Jeep line-up globally and will be the first Jeep to be built in India and also exported from here to other Right-hand drive markets.

The India Jeep Compass gets a 2-litre Multijet diesel that develops 165 PS of power and 350 Nm of torque. It will also be available with  the 1.4-litre petrol engine option. It also gets a 6-speed manual transmission as well as auto box and a 9-speed automatic transmission.

For safety the Jeep Compass is equipped with 50 standard safety features, ESC, 4X4 system, Hill start assist ( to prevent rollback) and the standard 6 airbags.

"To harness the great demand for the Jeep Compass, we have executed a customer outreach across 21 cities at 26 shopping malls across India," FCA President and Managing Director Kevin Flynn said.

Customers will experience, first-hand, the level of sophistication in the vehicle and those interested can book the SUV online or at any of FCA and Jeep Dealer network across India, he added. The Jeep Compass will compete with Toyota Fortuner and Ford Endeavour.
