Kolkata: Car 'assault' suspect arrested by police in Dum Dum

The main accused in the Anandpur car assault case, Abhishek Kumar Pandey has been accused of assaulting and pushing out a young girl from his car and running over another woman while trying to flee on Saturday (September 5) night. Although the accused was identified, the police could not nab him even after 48 hours of the incident. However, as his luck ran out, he was arrested from a place near Dum Dum on Tuesday (September 8) night.


Kolkata: Abhishek Kumar Pandey, accused of assaulting and throwing out a young girl from his car and running over another woman while trying to flee on Saturday (September 5) night, has been arrested in Dum Dum.
It is being investigated if anyone else was involved in the incident. The intelligence department of Lalbazar has helped Anandapur police station.

Abhishek is accused of molesting a young woman in a moving vehicle in Anandapur and crushing the rescuer with the wheel of the vehicle. Although the accused was identified, the police could not catch him even after 48 hours of the incident.

According to reports, Abhishek was apparently in a guest house in Mukundapur, around 4km from Anandapur police station, on Sunday night when the crime he has been accused of was being telecast on TV.

Investigators said that his mobile phone was switched off but the GPRS on his phone was working. His movement was tracked first to a guest house in the Anandapur area and then in the Sealdah home of a lawyer, after which he had switched off the GPRS.

On Tuesday (September 8) night, cops could again track him to a place near Dum Dum from where he was arrested.

According to police sources, Abhishek Kumar Pandey will be produced in court on Wednesday (September 9).

Incidentally, last Saturday (September 5), Nilanjana Bhattacharya and her husband Deep Shatapathi risked their lives to save a young girl from getting molested. Nilanjana Bhattacharya and her husband Deep Shatapathi were returning from Anandpur, adjacent to the EM bypass, at 12.30 pm on Saturday (September 5).

While sitting inside the car, the couple suddenly heard a 'save' scream of a girl’s voice floating out of the pitch-black darkness near the bypass. After hearing the voice, Nilanjana did not think twice, she came down to save the girl. When the accused saw Nilanjana coming in front of the car, he ran over the woman’s feet in his car. With a broken leg, the woman saved the young girl.

Nilanjana’s husband called the police immediately. The police came and rescued the assaulted girl. Nilanjana was admitted to a bypass hospital with serious injuries. Police have been searching for the accused since then.
