Forget gold or diamonds! A surprising report reveals cheese is the world’s most stolen item. From supermarkets to supply chains, discover why this everyday food has become a global theft hotspot.
People buy their daily essentials from shops or supermarkets. If you ask what's the most stolen item in the world, many of us would say gold or diamonds. But surprisingly, it's cheese. According to a study by the UK-based 'Centre for Retail Research', about 4% of the total cheese stock in stores is stolen. This has now become a major international problem.

Why is so much cheese being stolen?
So why is cheese a hot favourite for thieves? It's all about its high price and huge demand. Thieves steal cheese and sell it cheap to restaurants and small shops, feeding a massive black market. Plus, it doesn't spoil quickly, which makes it convenient for them. After cheese, the most stolen items are meat, chocolate, alcohol, seafood, and baby milk powder.
The problem is huge. In one incident in Britain, thieves used trucks to steal 22 tonnes of cheese in a single night! To stop this, supermarkets now use security tags, CCTV cameras, and even AI to monitor customers. Next time you're shopping, just notice the security around the cheese counter. It's amazing that a simple block of cheese has such a big crime story behind it.

Cheese Lovers
Among foodies, cheese has a fan base like no other. Whether it's the stringy mozzarella on a pizza, a melting slice in a burger, or a simple slice in a sandwich, its taste is something special. But the history of cheese is even more fascinating, taking us back almost 8,000 years to the Stone Age. There's an interesting story behind its discovery.
Legend has it that cheese was discovered by accident. In ancient times, an Arab merchant travelling through the desert stored milk in a pouch made from an animal's stomach. The desert heat, the journey's constant shaking, and an enzyme called 'rennet' from the pouch lining naturally turned the milk into cheese. Hungry and thirsty, he tried it, loved the unique taste, and that's how the world supposedly got this amazing food.
