The incident unfolded as the elderly couple sat outside Kmart, apparently talking to each other. Carter approached them and questioned them about the item.
“Hey, you stole that? You stole it? You’re a stealer? You steal it,” he said, pointing towards the security sensor on the box.

Carter later described the encounter in the caption accompanying his video, writing: “Walking past this couple and noticed something odd. Obviously, they had just left Kmart and couldn’t wait to get home.”
The footage quickly spread across social media, drawing criticism from several users. Carter's original post had its comments turned off, but the video was reposted on X, where users debated what had actually happened.
One of the key responses came from a woman named Sara Gadhwal, who said she had been shopping at Kmart and witnessed the couple at the checkout. According to her account, the pair had paid for the item but appeared unaware that the security tag or sticker needed to be removed before leaving the store.
“They did not steal anything. I was present there as a customer and saw them paying for the item at the register. Being elderly, they were unaware that the security tag/sticker needed to be removed before leaving. It was an honest mistake, not theft. Please refrain from accusing them without knowing the full truth,” she wrote.
The video also triggered accusations of racist behaviour from some social media users, particularly over the apparent language barrier between Carter and the couple. One user said the man “looked innocent” and suggested he could not understand the language well enough to defend himself.
Other reactions were even more heated, with users calling for Carter's social media account to be reported. Some also claimed the elderly couple were from Nepal, although that detail has not been independently verified.
The contrasting accounts have left social media users debating whether the security tag was mistaken for evidence of theft and whether the confrontation should have happened without first confirming what took place at the checkout.
