For over 5 hours, the ocean surface off Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula was on fire after a gas leak from an underwater pipeline.

Media reports said the fire started at the underwater pipeline that connects to a platform at state-owned oil company Petroleos Mexicanos' flagship Ku Maloob Zaap oil development platform.

The video of the fire in the Gulf of Mexico, shared by Mexican journalist Manuel Lopez San Martin, was viewed over 24 million times on social media.

No injuries were reported from the incident. Company workers reportedly used nitrogen to control the fire.

Angel Carrizales, head of Mexico's oil safety regulator ASEA, informed that the incident "did not generate any spill".

Petroleos Mexicanos clarified that production from the project had not been impacted by the incident.
